I think I've seen a round single level plastic lure holder that sits inside an 8" Orbix Hatch, but I can't seem to find where it could be purchased.  Am I crazy or is there something that is designed to fit on the lip of the Hatch that holds lures?

Thanks, Chris

I found the one that Hobie sells called a Gear Box that fits an 8" Hatch, does anyone know if that will work on the Orbix Hatch?

Thanks, Chris

I'm not sure if it will work or not.  We had a design meeting a few months ago about creating a couple of different gear storage options for the Orbix hatches.  I'll follow up with the factory to see if any are going to production.

Thanks, please let me know what you find out from the factory on any type of storage options that are scheduled to be released.  The Hobie Gear Box is nice since it allows you to keep some "key" tackle cose and ready for change without pulling something from your crate.  It also keeps the deck clear so you can Stand without worrying about stepping on your tackle.

I might try to go to a local shop that sells both types of Kayaks and see if I could try the Hobie Gear Box on the Orbix hatch just to make sure.  If I'm able to try it I'll report the results back to you.

Chris

Right now the projects we discussed are still on the drawing board.  Hopefully they will come to life, but it won't be soon enough for what you want to do.

Hit your local kayak shop and see what they have available for other brands.

I thought I saw one somewhere but now that i want to do the same thing I can't find it.

I was at a hardware store yesterday and picked up a small plastic pail that, with a little finess may work. I'm going to try it out this weekend and will post pics if I'm successful. My goal is toa allow me to take several small Plano boxes for the species I'll be targeting.

Tommy, it's been a year since I sent the original request on the Gear box for the Orbix 8" Hatch, has Wilderness Systems come up with anything yet?

OK I've come up with something that should work until WS can do a proper design ;-)

First I went to Walmart to try to find an 8" diameter pail but no joy. Then I went to our local Do It Best Hardware store and in the paint section they had small pails that were just about perfect..

I came home and set it inside the hatch. It was a litle too tall so I took my Dremmel tool and trimmed it to fit. Due to the slope of the hatch this turned out to not be an even cut. Also due to the "chines" in the hull I had to trim out a little on the side corners to allow it to sit inside properly (note to self you want to do this before trimming the top...)

This allows any water to drain out and will also allow it to be cleaned easier.

Total cost only a couple of bucks and about 1/2 hour to trim.

Here are some pics..

I am going to have to figure something out here also. It is such an obviously good place to have a hatch liner of some kind for the same reasons you suggested. I am going to see if the gear tray from my Hobie fits and I will advise.

hobie gear tray fits perfectly in diameter and cutout around latch but the lip on the tray will not allow the hatch to close.

Do you have a picture of it?

I went online and saw what you were referring to.

At the risk of sounding mutinous could you take a Hobbie 8" hatch and swap it for the Orbix hatch??

im not sure. Ill have to look at that. I am thinking in a slightly different direction now. I am going to investigate the feasibility of some sort of mesh bag/dry bag  insert.
