OK, I got my Yak. Now Ohio has me put those god awful numbers & lettering on it. Now my question to the masses is this. Do I need to do any kind of prep work on the Yak before I add the lettering & numbers ? Will they stick ok. I read once that you need to prep the Yak with acitone & maybe some light sanding. That will make them stick better. Is this true ?? Thank you Wilderness Syatems for a GREAT looking Yak !!! I love it & haven't had it on the water yet. Also,I gave her a nickname. Getting it printed up but haven't got it yet. I know my Daughters will love it. I will have to put it on too when it comes in. A Lady that does boat graphics will be sending it to me soon. Anyway, That is my question. Any ideas or thoughts concerning this will help me a lot. Thanks all.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO PUT ON THE "OH NUMBERS"... you can get whats called the Alternative Registration

here is the website...

http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/watercraft/reg/alternative/tabid/2776/de...

its just one sticker that you place on your kayak.

personally i like having the "OH numbers" on mine, i fish out of state quite a bit with kayakbassfishing.com and i find that they are a great ice breaker on the boat ramps and a great way to get people talking... "oh i see your from Ohio... thats a really nice set-up you got there." "do you really fish out of that thing?" and then its just a matter of setting the hook. :-)
Thanks Wade. I was at the BMV & they just wasn't sure about that Alternative registration so I just did it there. I cleaned the area down pretty good with some bathroom cleaner & rinsed it off real well & slapped those letters on. I really appreciate the info. Hope you are doing well this early spring Bass fishing. I have been to a few farm ponds & caught a couple but nothing as far as Hawgs go. Almost have the Yak ready to fish. Can't wait to take it on a test run. Once again, thank you.
I might be a little late on this conversation but Ohio does allow the reg. numbers to be placed inside a kayak. They even supply a little sticker with your number already on it for a small fee. Good fishing.
good morning I had to put group numbers on my sealution for a paddleing trip I did last year and I went to Staples office supply and got my numbers there they are a lot cheaper the the boating joints and they have a huge selection of styles and colors all the prep I did was washed the area with alcahol and they have stayed on and still look good I do hit them with a little car wax from time to time to keep them fresh hope this helps rjay
Since you already have a graphics person doing your boat's name. You should just get them to knock out the numbers too. It will stick really well (vinyl diecut I assume) and compliment your nickname!
Chad
that is a good idea Chad has... or you could always just paint them on yourself like i did. ;-)

all i did was use the old OH numbers that were on the hull and trace around them and then take them off and paint the numbers... stay inside the lines. :-)

love your paint job

If you have not already registered it you can get the small paddel crafter registration sticker that you can put "inside" your SOT yak.

I went to Canada on fishing trip with my kayak, in order to cross the border our yaks had to be reregistered with the number on the side.  I did no prep work and after two weeks of kayaking and ruff portages the numbers are staying on fine.  It’s been a year since our trip and I’ve had my yak out numerous times river fishing and other trips and my numbers are still holding strong.
