A day of firsts and a fourth!

I went out this week looking for some fun. Kevin said he had a spot for us, I was hesitant because I really wanted to head out to the CBBT but I took him up on the offer. We get to his spot and its literally every cast we hook into 13-17 inch Reds. Many times the bait wouldn’t get to the bottom before hooking up. I was like a kid in a…See More

Double header tagged fish!

Last week I was dying to get on the water and chase some deep water species but the wind wouldn’t allow it. I got an invite from Kevin  (www.KayakKevin.com) and Lee to fish in a local inlet. First we went for Reds and Specks. I hooked up with two but both are rather small. Virginia had almost no drum last year, some say it was the harsh winter others disagree and say it goes in cycles. Everyone agrees that there were non to be had last year, so it always…See More

1st Day of Summer

1st Day of summer came and I knew Id spend it on the water. Rob Choi had already caught a citation sheepshead and I wanted one bad. I couldn’t sleep the night before with all my nervous / anxious energy. It seems I always fish the best when I won’t be able to fish the next week and this time…See More

Jay Brooks replied to Steven Brewer's discussion Ride 115...any info please
"Steve, The Ride 115 is slightly longer and has a different hull thus adding the additional weight. A flat hull like the trident series uses less material and weighs less but is less ridged and has 100 lbs less capacity. The newly designed tri hull…"

Jay Brooks replied to Coaster's discussion Standing/ Casting in a Tarpon 160. Thoughts/ experience?
"I have had both the Ride and a T160. I have to agree with Rob that the Tarpon 160 was built to be the fastest fishing kayak on the market, so the stability needed for standing was given up for speed. It can be done with ALOT of practice but…"

Sight casting to Ciatation Stripers

I called Kevin and we made plans to head out for a lesson in sight casting Stripers. We paddled to the hunting grounds and began looking into the murky water. Kevin quickly stands up but I am still not confident enough to stand and fish out of my Tarpon 140. I decide I am going to buy a Wilderness Systems Ride 135 at that moment so I can hunt and not be led to fish.  Soon Justin and I see Kevin Trade his paddle for his rod. He fires a couple times, he hooks up. Justin and I paddle over to pot…See More

"Youre a lucky man, I wish I could live on that side of the water. This is over on the shoals between fishermans and smith island. Your moving into a fishermans paradise, Virginias best kept secret!"

About Me
I was introduced to kayak fishing in Texas on 2007 but was transplanted in Virginia by the Marine Corps. I have since made Virginia my home due to the vast fishing opportunities the Chesapeake Bay and tributaries offer. In my off time I run www.VirginiaKayakFisherman.com
Kayak(s) of Choice?
WS Tarpon 140
Accomplishments
Last year was the first year I have fished hard for trophy fish out of a kayak. I landed 3 Virginia Citation Sheepshead (24") last year and this year (2012 Jan -March) have landed a 46 inch Striper and a 25 inch Speckled Trout all earning citations.

My biggest accomplishment however was getting my wife into kayak fishing and guiding her to her first citation Speckled Trout which measured out to 27 inches.

I have been featured on the cover of Chesapeake Angler Magazine and have had my picture run in Kayak Angler Magazine.
