Holy Mackerel! (6.5 lb. Citation)

A couple of months ago I caught my first citation fish, a 44-inch Red Drum, while fishing Cape Hatteras with Rob Alderman. My wife had just gotten her new Tarpon 120 and decided to stay on the beach that day as the seas were a little rough for a novice paddler.

Last weekend she and I went kayak fishing and we caught a few nice Spanish Mackerel. She caught the largest at about 17 inches. Obviously, she was just getting… Continue

Rock n' Report

My friend, Doug Jr., and I paddled out on the Pasquotank River this morning. We were looking for rockfish ahead of a cold front headed our way this evening. We were fishing when the sun came up.

We each found a couple of keepers and Doug Jr. managed to snag a 3-4 lb. largemouth bass that he released. Smallest rock was 18", largest was 20 1/2". (Doug let me borrow a fish for the picture.)

All in all, a good morning of fishing. Now it's time to get some fall yard work… Continue

I said 'flat fish', not 'catfish'...

I went out this evening after work looking for either a puppy drum or some flounder on Big Flatty Creek. I trolled a chartreuse Gulp 3" swimming mullet under a popping cork on the way to the 'real' fishing ground.

Once I got there I stopped paddling and surveyed the water to plan my attack. As soon as I started paddling again I checked my float and it was thrashing around with this guy under it.

This was the only caught… Continue

A lilttle flatty on Big Flatty Creek

I had planned to meet one of my friends for some fishing from the kayaks this afternoon. Unfortunately, he had to cancel, so I went out alone. I launched from a boat ramp onto Big Flatty Creek near Weeksville, NC.

There was a pretty good breeze blowing when I launched, but the wind died off while I was out and the water became slick calm.

I saw fish breaking the surface all around me, but couldn't get any of them to bite. I… Continue

Night time is the right time...

I took the Ride out this evening on the Pamlico Sound looking for a sunset speckled trout bite. I left the campground and paddled into the wind planning to drift for flounder on the way back if the trout weren't biting.

I struck out on the trout, but caught this puppy drum instead. This is my first puppy drum from the kayak and my first time fishing after sunset. I also got to test my new homebrew all-around light this evening and it could be seen over a mile away.…

Hey Jeff, Most of my yak fishing has been freshwater.... Did make an Epic Paddle From Sea Level to Core Banks. Wade fished in the surf, hooked the biggest Red in my life.Fought him for about 10 min. Rolled up in a wave about 20ft. away and then he was gone.... 6 Ft. Fenwick Rod, 6# Line and a Penn 260 Slammer Reel. Oh Well, can't catch em if you don't go.

I have got a Ride 135, in addition to 3 of the Tarpons. It is a great kayak. Certainly a different hull, offering more stability, but plenty of room....and a good fishing platform.
