Fish America

I had Rick Bach with me yesterday, who is fishing his way across America, while reporting his adventures for Outdoor Life Magazine in a series entitiled "Fish America".Rick started out in June from Cape Cod and is working his way around the coast for the next 3 months. What I would give to be 24 years old again and pulling this tour. Yeh--He is a lucky S.O.B.Rick had never kayaked fish before and while I had a number of different adventures I could have taken him on--I knew that the yak would be…See More

The Mothership.

The one thing I love most and preach most often about kayak fishing is the unlimited potential for adventures.Wether one wants to catch bass and brim in their local river or lake--or go to their favorite flats spot for red drum there is no lack of fun to be had.I personally love to be in open ocean and I push myself and the yak to the utmost limit. After following guys like Jim Sammons and Kayak Kevin for years prior to becoming a kayak angler I knew just how I wanted to fish from my plastic…See More

Beating the Summer Time Dul-Drums :-)

The warm summer water combined with favorable winds for clear water and a lil bit of luck. Lead to the chance to jump in the water with a mask and gear to capture this UW shot of a 30inch (or so) Red Drum, while guiding some clients.Just cause it's hot outside doesn't meant there is no red drum to be captured. There are fish to be caught ranging from puppy drum upto the fat slobs. One just has to know how to find them in their yak.Alot of times you can find a school on the move around the inlets…See More

A Good Day on the Water

It was a beautiful day on the Outer Banks Saturday. Sadly the old addage of East is the least, when it comes to wind and catching applied on this day.Any East wind is great for clearing the water, but sometimes it just makes it to clear and that is exactly what happened.I spent 4 hours on the water and almost 3 of those standing. I saw 2 cobias, 3 kings, a jack crevalle, along with millions of blues and spanish, but I couldn't get hardly anything to bite. Most of the fish were running deep,…See More

The Wildy Team Continues to Grow.

Went out yesterday with newbie kayakers Rick and Brian Neumann.I've known Rick and his son about 10 years now, since my days running the Rodanthe Pier. Rick is a published author and writes regularly for The Fisherman Magazine.Rick had called me to ask some questions about an article he was woking on. At the end of the conversation I asked Rick if he and Brian would be interested in trying their hand at some yak fishing. Rick responded by saying that they had never tried it, but had heard many…See More

The Brown Bombers

After having busted the drum the other the day, I got numerous calls letting me know that the cobias had popped up in "EPIC" numbers about 60 miles south of me. I was very excited to hear this, yet I was a little shocked, because it is a couple /few weeks early for them. But, just cause they were early didn't mean that we wouldn't be hunting them the next day. :-)Sure enough--they showed up in my spot the following day. No one or two fish pods, but rather 5-8 fish pods that turned 10 ft areas in…See More

Handing Out a Beat Down in the Fog

Hooked 15 and landed 11, with the smallest being 44 inches. If you reading this and you are still only considering purchasing your 1st yak..All I can say is..What are you waiiting for?? Go to your local Wilderness Dealer and get on the water..My boy and I punched out in slick calm conditions, with fog so thick we lost sight of each other after 70ft. We would have to hollar out in order to find each other when we got seperated fighting fish.Never saw the school of Drum. I found them using my nose…See More

Outriggers. And Not the Stabilizing Kind

I took one of my 1st Surf fishing heavers and gave it anew purpose, as a 12ft outrigger for live biats on the yak.

And it worked like acharm.

I am anchoredand have a 14lb bag of chum on a release clip just under the front of the boat. This set-up allows me to keep…

Rob, thanks for a great time on Monday. Launching into the ocean was a great confidence builder. We both had a lot of fun.

We're planning to get a kayak for Sandy before the Spring. She's looking at either the Ride or the Tarpon. Maybe I can get her a test ride in JAM's 120.
