Stoker Shrimp tail

killer day out on the ultra shallow flats of redfish bay today. had an epic paddle out to my favorite camping spot and caught a few fish on the way. we paddled out to the camp and chilled for a while, had a snack, then enjoyed a perfect conditions for the ride home....

the Stoker Shrimp Tail is a new lure on the scene created by my buddy Henry Stokes for dealing with the snags associated with fishing in and around the seagrasses of the laguna madre bay…

A Change of View, Tautog / Blackfish report from Virginia

I had been fishing hard for my citation speckled trout the past few weeks so I need a change. I had been watching the reports and they weren’t coming back favorable but I had to change the scenery. The water temps had been spiking to around 50 so I knew it should be on.  Lee Williams called me up and told me where I could get some Fiddler and live Blue Crabs and I was off. On a side note most places should be carrying Fiddlers by this weekend. I began by trying to find the depth the fish…

REI Introduction to Kayak Fishing Seminar

I was invited by the REI Willowbrook store in northwest Houston to present my Introduction to Kayak Fishing seminar last Saturday. We had a packed house. I usually plan on an hour to an hour and a half for this presentation but we had so many good questions on everything from safety to clothing to tackle that I was there for 3 hrs. It was an excellent seminar from my perspective. I always have so much fun doing this seminar because people have such a curiosity about fishing from a kayak. I…

Speckled Trout Report from Virginia

I had been chasing my citation speckled trout (24") all spring. A Citation is an award you win from the state that certifies you caught a trophy fish. I typically attempt to go for release citations, only requiring a photo of the fish on a measuring device, then the fish may be released. I had been on fish…

Rigging My New Ride 115

I picked up a new Ride 115 from Appomattox River Company the other day and headed over to Yakattack's shop to do a little rigging. I was really looking forward to tossing ideas back and forth with Luther - when you get two gear heads together you never know what you will come up with. Being that I mostly fish rivers I didn't want to do a bunch of rigging just for the sake of rigging. The last thing I need is a bunch of…

Southern Kayak Anglers Tournament Trail 2012

Fished the first SKA tournament of the year at Stone Mountain Lake this Saturday March 17 . We had beautiful weather for the event, water temperature jumped ten degrees in a week because of the warm weather we are having here in Georgia. This was the first event of the year so I was trying to get a good start. To make a long story short it worked out fishing was tough myself and one other guy had a five fish limit. I ended up taking second place and had big fish of the tournament to come…

3rd annual world seagrass day at charlie marshall elementary school

this marks the third year in reaching out to hundreds of fifth graders in aransas pass who are present and future stewards of the vast seagrass meadows of redfish bay. this year will also mark the first designation of a "seagrass stewardship school".

this year the fifth graders will be asked to draft a resolution that further promotes the importance of seagrasses…

Fishing with Austin Pritchard

I met up with fishing buddy Austin Pritchard Saturday morning to fish the falling tide.

We had a tight weather window with wind and rain in the forecast, so we hit the water in search of redfish and trout. The trout were few and far between with one brought to hand and one lost at boatside.

Here's a bit of advice: If you're going to fish a "weather window" then keep a marine radio tuned in for weather updates. The alert let me know the wind and rain was coming and the…

Another Windy Weekend

SUBTITLE :  Things to do when the weather keeps you from fishing

Hey gang.  I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m sick to death of the weather pattern we’ve been stuck in lately; nice through the week and sucksverymuchbad on the weekend.  By the way, I stole that term from my buddy Ken Bergmann.

It seems like we’ve been in this same pattern all winter.  I’ll be sitting at my desk on Wednesday or Thursday when my crackberry starts…
